If
there was one band that influenced the Tommy Castro
Band more than any other, it's Booker T. And The MG's,
the legendary band, that was the heart and sound of
Stax Records in Memphis Tennessee in the 60s.
One night we were playing in small club in San Francisco
and there was a guy in audience that looked a lot like
Steve Cropper. Coincidentally, I had just finished playing
"Thats How Strong My Love Is" By Ottis Redding.
Turns out it actually was Steve Cropper that was there.
Randy and I talked to him on our break. He said, "thanks
for playing my song" (he wrote that song, and most
of the songs with Otis back then). Steve Cropper prduced
a record for The Dynatones while Randy was in the band,
so they knew each other.
We met Booker T at the Bay Area Music Awards one year.
We crossed paths a number of times. One of the most
memorable was at the Beale St Music Festival one year.
Me and the band stood in the wings of an outdoor stage,
with Booker T. And The MG's, on the banks of the mighty
Mississippi, while they played that sound that we love
so much. Eddy Floyd sang with them that night. What
a grove. I still listen to those records all the time.
So I'm really stoked that we will be opening for them
in The Florida Theater this Thurs, May 5th, 2006.
