Coco Montoya, Jimmy Thackery, and Tommy Castro |
|
The
first time I saw Coco Montoya, was at an Albert Collins
show in the 80s. It was a great show, and Albert was
amazing. The first note almost knocked me off my seat,
I'll never forget it. Coco was in the band, he played
rhythm, or second guitar. He took a couple of solos
and I thought to myself, who the hell is that guy, he's
a bad boy. He went on to sing a couple of times as well
that night, and then I thought , this guy needs his
own band. I later learned how Albert had taught him
to play. Very cool.
A few years later I heard Coco's first release, Gotta
Mind To Travel, on Blind Pig Records and have been
a fan ever since.
We
finally met after the Santa Cruz Blues Festival one
year at Moe's Alley. It was like seeing an old friend
even though we never met. We Jammed that night and dozens
of times after that. Our bands toured together once
and have been on the same bill a bunch of times. I hate
having to go on after him!
He's the kind of friend I can call anytime when I want
to talk to somebody that I know will understand. We
have a lot in common.
Coco is a great talent, he has a great band, and we
are all looking forward to the string of gigs we're
doing together in April 2006.
